PARKINSON'S DISEASE
Did you know that 90% of people with Parkinson’s Disease have difficulties with speech and swallowing?
Communication difficulties can make it hard for others to understand people with PD, which can lead to feelings of frustration isolation.
Many people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) wish to maintain movement, balance, communication, swallowing despite having a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease.
Speech Pathologists intervention can support people with PD to improve and maintain their voice, speech and swallowing. Fortunately, there are a lot of treatments available that have been proven to be successful in helping people with PD address speech and swallowing difficulties.
HOW WE SUPPORT SPEECH AND VOICE CHANGES:

There are many ways to support speech and voice for people with PD.
LSVT LOUD & SPEAK OUT! are highly researched programs for people specifically with PD and other neurological conditions.

LSVT LOUD & SPEAK OUT! aims to improve and maintain vocal strength and loudness by targeting muscles of the voice through a variety of exercises.
SPEAK OUT! & LSVT LOUD are both evidence based programs that have shown multiple positive outcomes for people with PD and other movement/neurological related disorders. Both treatments have been shown to improve loudness, breath support, clarity of speech, swallowing, facial expression, articulation and rate of speech.

SPEECH PATHOLOGY INTERVENTION

In order to maximise changes in voice, a series of exercises are used, emphasising vocal effort, intensity and loudness.
Many people with PD have a misperception of how loud they are being and put less effort into voice. This means that their voice becomes difficult to understand.

Speech Pathology intervention uses principles of motor learning to “recalibrate” how people with PD perceive their speech, so that they can ‘feel’ that their voice is actually in a normal vocal range. Intervention focusses on strengthening muscles used for speech production and train people to move from automatic voice to intentional voice.
Therapy sessions move through a range of exercises and activities that support improvements in speech, voice, cognition and swallowing.
